Regional bank | New credit card division on TSYS

A credit card program, built from the ground up

After 14 years of outsourcing its credit cards to other issuers, a Midwest regional bank had no card products of its own. It built a new card division from scratch on the TSYS TS2 platform, launching the commercial portfolio in 2013, the official consumer rollout in November 2013 in time for the holiday shopping season, and small business cards in early 2014. The founder joined as a technical business systems analyst and moved into the technical lead role as the program progressed. The platform became the foundation for later card products and for absorbing future acquisitions.

What the work covered

  • Standing up TS2 for authorizations, clearing, fraud scoring, statements, and collections
  • Building new-account underwriting as a Zoot WebRules developer: account-opening logic feeding TSYS, and Zoot's integration with the bank's digital banking systems
  • Setting up the Equifax credit bureau integration and credit decisioning rules, plus prescreen promotional offers, and testing every application and decision flow
  • Commercial card hierarchies, online treasury file transfers, and MCC spending controls
  • Small business cards with employee-level spending controls and separate business credit scoring
  • Custom consumer rules the platform didn't support out of the box, including an extra grace day on late fees and blocks on automatic penalty APR
  • Letting cardholders change their bonus rewards category online each quarter, with no card reissue
